They picture heat, and the highlands are cold at dawn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They picture a complicated, risky trip, and it turns out to be one of the easiest places to travel once a few practical things are sorted. The tourist visa is straightforward, but the cost depends on your nationality, so check your own case before you assume the standard fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Single-entry tourist visa: 50 USD<\/strong> for most nationalities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Multiple-entry visa: 100 USD.<\/strong> US citizens are required to get this one, even for a holiday, so Americans should budget 100 USD, not 50.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply online in advance at the official government portal, <a href=\"https:\/\/visa.immigration.go.tz\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/visa.immigration.go.tz\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">visa.immigration.go.tz<\/a>, ideally at least three weeks before departure to avoid queues on arrival. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The online application needs a photo.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date, with at least 2 blank pages. If you book with us, send a copy of your passport ahead of time: it lets us prepare your national park permits in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Health_before_you_travel\"><\/span>Health before you travel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are no mandatory vaccinations to enter Tanzania. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The one exception is yellow fever, which is required only if you are arriving from a country where the disease is endemic and you have stayed there more than 12 hours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tetanus booster is generally recommended for any international travel, and any other health decision is a personal one to make with your doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Malaria is increasingly rare in Tanzania, but mosquitoes are still around, so bring a good repellent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most lodges and camps use insecticide sprays and provide mosquito nets, so the risk is low. I have written more about <a href=\"https:\/\/savannahexplorers.net\/blog\/2026\/07\/30\/malaria-in-tanzania-safari\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2010\">malaria on safari in Tanzania<\/a> if you want the fuller picture, and I am not a doctor, so talk to yours about prevention before you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Money_and_payments\"><\/span>Money and payments<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The local currency is the Tanzanian shilling, but US dollars are widely accepted and are the practical currency to carry for tips and incidentals. The one rule that catches people out is the age and condition of the notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bring US dollar bills <strong>issued in 2009 or later<\/strong>, clean and undamaged. Older or torn notes are refused.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Larger bills (50 and 100 USD) get better exchange rates<\/strong> than small ones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Credit cards are not always accepted<\/strong>, and where they are, fees and poor exchange rates often apply. Carry cash.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ATMs are available 24 hours at most banks<\/strong>b Bank branches open Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 15:00.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_around_domestic_flights_and_roads\"><\/span>Getting around: domestic flights and roads<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Safari travel in Tanzania means light aircraft between parks and unpaved roads inside them. Neither is a problem, but both shape what you pack and what to expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Domestic flight baggage<\/strong> is usually 15 to 20 kg per person, plus 5 kg of hand luggage, in a soft bag. It varies with the airline and aircraft, so check your ticket. There is usually no online check-in; you check in at the airport.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Roads inside the parks are unpaved<\/strong>, including the main route through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the Serengeti. Dust, some bumps, and the occasional flat tire are part of it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Internet is slow or absent<\/strong> in many remote areas. It is one of the questions I get asked most, so here is the simple version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Around <strong>10 USD per person per day<\/strong> is a good guideline for a safari guide.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most lodges and tented camps have a <strong>tip box<\/strong>, where tips are pooled and shared equally among all the staff.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bring the tip money in cash, in the same clean US dollar bills mentioned above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Local_rules_worth_knowing\"><\/span>Local rules worth knowing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few local laws and customs are not obvious to visitors, and one or two can actually get you fined or in trouble. None of them are hard to follow once you know them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Single-use plastic bags have been banned<\/strong> since June 2019. You can be fined for carrying them into the country, so take duty-free items out of their plastic bags before you land. Clear zip-lock bags for toiletries are fine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Never photograph<\/strong> uniformed personnel (police, military, officials) or government buildings. It is treated as illegal. Always ask before photographing people, and never offer money, especially to children, for a photo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dress modestly<\/strong> away from the beach. Tanzania is mostly Muslim, so cover shoulders, midriff, and knees in towns and villages. Swimwear is fine on the beach, not in restaurants or common areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Insurance_and_medical_cover\"><\/span>Insurance and medical cover<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every safari we run includes Medivac cover, which pays for air ambulance evacuation to leading hospitals in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, or South Africa if it is ever needed. We activate it directly from our Arusha office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>One condition matters: <\/strong>Medivac works only for guests who hold a travel insurance policy with medical expense coverage, so you do need your own travel insurance in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are heading to Zanzibar, there is a separate requirement. Since October 2024, all visitors to the Zanzibar archipelago must hold inbound travel insurance purchased through the ZIC (Zanzibar Insurance Company) at visitzanzibar.go.tz. It costs around 44 USD per person for the length of your stay and covers medical emergencies, evacuation, and repatriation. Entry is denied without it, so sort this one out before you travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Arrival_what_happens_when_you_land\"><\/span>Arrival: what happens when you land<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you land, your guide or driver is waiting at the airport exit, holding a sign with your name and our logo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you cannot find your driver, you call our Arusha office and we sort it out, no forms and no waiting on hold. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a small thing, but after a long flight it is the moment most people remember as the point where the safari actually begins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Hakuna matata<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"One_more_thing_before_you_fly\"><\/span>One more thing before you fly<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have not settled on how you get into the country, it helps to know which of Tanzania&#8217;s airports fits your trip before you book.
