I’m Italian, I have lived in Arusha<\/a> in northern Tanzania since 2012, and that same year I co-founded Savannah Explorers with Greyson, my Tanzanian business partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That’s 14 years of organizing safaris from the same office, in the same town. This page explains how I got here and what I do, because if you’re going to trust what I write on this blog, it helps to know who is writing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I’ve had a passion for Africa, wildlife and the outdoors since I was a child. I wanted to become a vet. Instead I graduated in information technology and spent years working in IT, which is a sensible career and not the one I kept thinking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So I traveled instead, on safari across Africa whenever I could get away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Then came my first safari in Tanzania, and that settled it: the sheer amount of wildlife, the landscapes, and the way people here greet a stranger they have no reason to greet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I met Greyson on the ground. We opened a safari company together, and I moved to Arusha with my whole family to start over. Tanzania has been home ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Savannah Explorers is a Tanzanian company based in Arusha, and we run our safaris ourselves instead of handing them to someone else. After 14 years, this is what that means in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We also organize Kilimanjaro<\/a> treks and beach stays in the Zanzibar<\/a> archipelago, usually as extensions to a safari. The team<\/a> that handles all of it works out of the Arusha office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I’m up at 6:30. I get my son ready for school, have breakfast, go through email, then spend time with my horses before the office opens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When I can, I ride out through the village with Laurent, my groom. Cows, goats and sheep grazing. Kids walking back from school and getting excited about the horses. Food cooking outside, grass just cut, music coming from a church, motorbikes everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n My Swahili is still a work in progress, and it has produced some results at home. There was the day our dada put the spaghetti into cold water because of something I said badly. Hakuna matata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I write here as a resident and as an operator, which are two different kinds of knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The resident knows the highlands are cold at night and that you’ll want a sweater in July, whatever the word “Africa” suggests. The operator knows what a park fee costs this year and how long the drive from the Ngorongoro to the Serengeti actually takes with a full vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both matter when you’re planning a trip. So the articles here are practical: temperatures, costs, distances, what to pack, what to expect month by month. I’d rather give you a table you can use than a paragraph of adjectives. Tanzania sells itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After 14 years I still enjoy a game drive. What holds my attention now is small: a bird that’s hard to find, an animal doing something I haven’t seen before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For anyone who wants the facts in one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jambo.
